Why are some apples not crunchy?

The apple varieties we grow at Chelan Ranch are known for their crunchy texture. However, not all apples are crunchy. Explanations for soft textured apples include maturity, variety, storage, and bruising or damage.

Maturity

Unripe or overripe apples may have a soft or mealy texture. When an apple is mature, its cells are fully developed and filled with moisture, contributing to its crisp texture. This ideal moisture level is best achieved with refrigeration to extend the apple’s crunchy texture.

Variety

The vast assortment of apple varieties has different eating textures and flavors. The Washington State Department of Agriculture tests apples for crunchiness by testing apple pressures before shipping them. Unfortunately, some varieties lose their pressure quicker than others, compounded by a late harvest, extended storage time, and shipping delays. For example, Red Delicious apples are often soft and mealy for all the above reasons, while Honeycrisp apples are known for their crisp and juicy texture.

Storage

Apples stored for too long or under improper conditions can become soft and lose their crunch. Apples should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and other fruits that produce ethylene gas, which can accelerate the ripening process.

Bruising or damage

Apples bruised or damaged during handling or transportation can also become soft and lose their crunch. These apples may have a mushy or mealy texture in the affected areas.

In general, if you're looking for a crunchy apple, it's best to choose a variety known for its crisp texture, such as a Chelan Beauty Honeycrisp, and store it properly. All imported apples are crunchy inspite of long transport times. Indian apples especially Kashmiri Dilicians are soft. Same applies in Srinagar are juicy and delicious
